Biography
Rafael Borja is a Doctor in Chemical Sciences since 1989. He obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in Chemical Sciences from the University of Cordoba, Cordoba, Spain, in 1985 and 1986, respectively. In 1986 he started his scientific activity in the Instituto de la Grasa belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones CientÃficas, CSIC) of Seville, Spain. During the period 1992-1994 he made a research stay in the Environmental Technology Centre of the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), Manchester, UK. He is currently a Research Scientist and responsible for the Wastewater Treatment Group, which is integrated in the Food Biotechnology Department of the Instituto de la Grasa (CSIC). He is author of more than 230 original peer-reviewed research papers published in international Scientific Journals included in the Science Citation index (SCI). He is a Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal Process Biochemistry since 2000 and of “The Scientific World Journal†between 2012 and 2016. He has supervised five doctoral theses and is co-author of six patents. He has been responsible and participated in 24 international and national researches through different projects funded by the European Union, Spanish Ministries of Science and Innovation and Economy and Competitiveness and Andalusia Government. He has participated in 17 research contracts carried out between the Instituto de la Grasa and various Spanish and foreign companies related to the purification and treatment of wastewaters and solid wastes from agro food industries. He was vice-president of the International Association of Mediterranean Agro-industrial Wastes (IAMAW) between 2013 and 2015, being currently member of the Audit Committee of this Association, which is located in Perugia, Italy. In 1991, he received the “San Alberto Magno†Doctoral Thesis Prize awarded by the National Association of Spanish Chemists (ANQUE), Delegation of Andalusia. According to the Scholar Google and Scopus databases he has an h index of 54 and 43, respectively with a total of 8550 and 5824 cites, respectively (accessed on 30 November 2017). According to the h and Fh indexes, he is currently included among the most outstanding Spanish researchers within the topic: Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology.
